Relief Carving

Relief carving is a form of wood carving where a design or image is carved into the surface of a wooden panel or plaque. Unlike other carving techniques that involve creating three-dimensional sculptures, relief carving focuses on creating a design that appears raised or elevated from the background. The carver carefully removes wood from the background, leaving the design in higher relief. This technique allows for intricate details and depth to be achieved in the carved image. Relief carving can range from shallow carvings with subtle relief to deep carvings that create a more pronounced three-dimensional effect. It is a popular form of artistic expression and can be found in various cultures and historical periods.
